Faulty Electrical Outlets: Signs of Trouble

The electrical outlet is supposed to safely and securely power anything plugged in, but it is not perfect. It is prone to a host of issues, and it is your responsibility to check for signs of trouble. Let’s go over some common red flags.

Touch the surface of your outlets. If they feel warm or show signs of discoloration, it could indicate electrical issues. Discoloration may be a result of overheating, suggesting poor connections or wiring problems within the outlet.

Sparks or burning smells are also clear indicators of electrical problems. If you notice these signs when plugging in or unplugging devices, it's crucial to address the issue immediately to prevent potential fire hazards.

Are lamps flickering? If your electrical devices experience intermittent power supply when connected to a specific outlet, it might be a sign of a loose or damaged connection. Ignoring this issue may lead to further damage and pose a safety risk.

Finally, if you find yourself resetting circuit breakers more often than usual, it may indicate a problem with one or more electrical outlets. This could be a sign of an overloaded circuit or a faulty outlet that needs attention.

Is It Time to Replace the Electrical Outlet?

An electrical outlet replacement is not common, but it is necessary in certain situations. Over time, electrical outlets can wear out. If your home is equipped with outlets that are several decades old, it's advisable to replace them, as they may not meet current safety standards and could pose a risk.

If you notice recurring problems with a particular outlet, such as tripping breakers or sparking, it's a clear sign that the outlet needs replacement. Ignoring these issues may lead to more extensive damage and increased safety risks.

Our Customers Love our Services

John was on time, explained the issue I was having, offered me a couple of options, and then repaired the switch that was giving me problems, following my preferences of the choices he had given me.  He was pleasant, professional, and did a great job.  Would not hesitate to  use Mr. Electric again!

Austin, electrician and his teammate we’re great! Both were punctual, courteous, and very informative in explaining the situation and their recommendations to replace a bad breaker in our panel.  There was NO frivolous attempt up-sale to items we didn’t need and they were straight to the point honest in their recommendation. In the end, I would described the customer service Austin and his teammate provided me as, AWESOME! Being a new home owner, I am glad I have found  this company and will be using them any future electrical needs!

Outstanding communication and very professional service.  I would highly recommend Mr. Electric.  Received both e-mails and texts on appointment to include a photo and short bio of the actual electrician (Brad Mason) who would be doing the work.  Wish all home service providers did the same.  Brad was on time (actually a few minutes early).  He installed 30AMP breaker and associated RV plug in our garage.  To avoid any sheetrock repairs it was necessary for him to drop the line to the house electric panel through a wall with foam insulation, with very limited head/body clearance for him to work.  No mess left behind from the actual plug installation on another wall.

Rick from Mr. Electric arrived when expected and quickly diagnosed the problem.  He recommended a solution and gave us a proposal for solving the problem.  We asked when he could do the work and how long would it take.  He said he could do the job that day and it would take 4 or 5 hours.  The price was reasonable, and we told him to get started.  He did a very good job, neat and within the estimated time.  The invoice amount for the job was was the same as the proposal amount.  We are planning on having Mr. Electric and hopefully Rick do more work in the near future to upgrade our home's 50+ year old electrical system.
